Research

Maria’s research interests are primarily in household and population economics of developing countries, with a particular focus on the following areas:

• Household bargaining between spouses, and how this relates to intergenerational transfers and relationships with siblings
• Determinants of health and longevity and how this influences demand for long-term care and intergenerational transfers
• Changing marriage market conditions in China and the impact of imbalanced sex ratios
• Factors influencing women’s fertility decisions and their long-term impact on female labor force participation
