Dr Alis Oancea is a Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Ageing, and holds a joint fellowship with the Department of Educational Studies, University of Oxford. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She studied social sciences (sociology, psychology, education and management) and philosophy, has a PhD in epistemology and research evaluation and is approaching completion of a second PhD in Oxford, in philosophy of education research.

 

Research interests

Dr Oancea’s interests are in the fields of research policy, research evaluation, philosophy of social research, and education and lifelong learning.

Recent funded research:

·          Quality of applied and practice-based research (with John Furlong, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, 2004-2005)

·          Education research capacity in the UK (British Educational Research Association, 2003-2004)

·          Nuffield Review of 14-19 Education and Training in England and Wales, phase 1 (2004-2006) and 2 (2006-2008).

·          Practices and criteria for research evaluation (2000-2005, University of Bucharest)

·          Criticisms of education research in the UK in the 1990s (2002-2006, University of Oxford)

·          Inclusive educational environments in communities (UNICEF, 2000-2002)

·          Transition in post-communist European countries (European Social Foundation, 2004-2005)

Her current work in the Institute focuses on research quality and research evaluation in gerontology and education research. She also collaborates with Dr George Leeson in developing the Education, Technology and Lifelong Learning research strand of the Institute. From 2004 to 2008 she was Assistant Editor of Ageing Horizons, and edited a special issue on education and lifelong learning in March 2008.  She is a member of the EAST (Eastern-European Ageing Societies in Transition) network facilitated by the OIA.

 

Professional commitments

Dr Oancea’s teaching activity includes social theory, philosophy of educational research, and strategies for research at the University of Oxford (working with MSc and DPhil students); undergraduate tutorials on education reform, at the University of Oxford;  and philosophy of education, educational theory and pedagogy at the University of Bucharest.

 

She is Associate of the Evidence Network at the School of Social Science and Public Policy, King's College London, member of the Oxford Centre for Sociocultural Activity Theory, and a member of the British Educational Research Association, European Educational Research Association, Society of Educational Studies, and Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain.

 

She is Research Associate of the ESRC Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE).

 

She serves as an expert reviewer to the FP6/ FP7 of the European Commission, to the European Science Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust, and acts as peer reviewer for the British Educational Research Journal, Oxford Review of Education, Research Papers in Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, Evidence and Policy, Scottish Review of Education, Journal of Intergenerational Relationships, among others.
