Research

Dr Andreas Hoff is Professor für Soziale Gerontologie at the Hochschule Zittau-Görlitz, Fakultät für Sozialwissenschaften in Germany.  Until January 2011 Dr Hoff was a James Martin Senior Research Fellow of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing and Head of the Research Programme “Intergenerational Relationships, Families and Communities”.

Dr Hoff directed the British part of the international research project “Carers@Work - Between Job and Care: Conflict or Opportunity?” (Partners in Germany, Italy and Poland) funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Moreover, he coordinated the research project “Future of Cities: Climate Change and Population Ageing – Conflict and Convergence” in collaboration with partners at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, the Royal College of Art in London, as well as Kyushu and Shizuoka Universities in Japan, funded by the Oxford Programme for the Future of Cities within the James Martin 21st Century School. He directed the “Eastern-European Ageing Societies in Transition” (EAST) Research Network. His main research interests include:

  • Intergenerational relations: intergenerational family relationships, grandparenting, intergenerational programs, intergenerational relations in wider community;
  • Family care: informal care, home care, combining family care with employment; migrant care workers, telecare and assisted living technologies;
  • Ageing in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE): demographic change and ageing societies in CEE, as well as societal and policy implications
  • Housing & technology: future of cities in ageing societies, mobility in old age, smart-home technologies; Social exclusion: social exclusion/inclusion of older people;
  • Cross-nationally comparative research: European welfare state / care regimes;
