Research

Isabella Aboderin is a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing at Oxford University and Senior Researcher at the African Health and Policy Research Centre, Kenya where she co-ordinates the programme on fertility change.  She is Regional Chair for Africa of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG), Advisory Board member of the World Demographic and Ageing Forum (WDA), Member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Ageing, and Board Member elect of HelpAge International.  Isabella serves as member of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights Working Group on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa and on the Programme Committee for the 2012 World Generations and Ageing Congress in St.Gallen, Switzerland. Together with Jaco Hoffman she co-ordinates the African Research on Ageing Network (AFRAN).  

In her capacity as IAGG Africa Regional Chair, Isabella is convenor of the forthcoming 1st Africa Region Conference on Gerontology and Geriatrics, 2012, in Cape Town.  In addition, Isabella is working with partners to develop the IAGG Global Social Initiative on Ageing (GSIA) for Africa, including a three-country initiative to advance routine national evidence generation on older persons in Africa , in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Centre for Gender and Social Development.

Isabella’s research on issues of ageing in sub-Saharan Africa focuses on four areas a) ageing policy and development agendas b) social determinants of health in old age c) health systems and access to health care in old age and d) Intergenerational support and family relationships.

She holds a Ph.D from the School for Policy Studies from the University of Bristol, UK, an MSc in Health Promotion Sciences from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a BSc in Cellular and Molecular Pathology from the University of Bristol. She is currently undertaking research in Nairobi, Kenya.
