Crisis? What Crisis? Human Welfare in the Balance

Taichang Chen, a member of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, will be addressing the conference on Saturday.  £5.00 allows you entry to the full conference.  This includes two keynote speeches and each of the six individually themed panels. Join us for the full two days or just a panel or two.

On Friday Dr. Nick Rose, an expert on mental health delivery in crisis zones, will deliver a keynote address about some of the contradictions inherent in the delivery of mental health aid to Haiti.
On Saturday, keynote speaker Kate Raworth, Senior Researcher for Oxfam and former Fellow of the Overseas Development Institute, will address the conference about the need to rethink global economic growth in the face of planetary boundaries and global inequalities, with reference to her recent paper, ‘A safe and Just Space for Humanity, Can We Live Within the Doughnut?’

Francesca Ghillani, DPhil candidate, has given a seminar at the Centre for Gender Studies of the University of Sussex. The talk, titled "The Dynamics of Bodily Changes and Self in Older Women: A Comparative Study", was part of the seminar series "NGender".

Francesca was recently elected as member of the Governing Body and confirmed as member of the Academic Committee of Wolfson College.

DPhil Candidate Seung-Min Park has been selected as ‘The Best Student Researcher’ by the Brain Korea 21st Century (BK 21) Research Committee (funded by Korean Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology) of the Department of Sociology in Korea University, Seoul, in March 2012.

Matthew Tye presented a paper on Ageing in Vietnam in the Human Development Panel held at the South East Asian Studies Symposium 2012, St Anthony's College Oxford, 11th March 2012.

In addition, Matthew gave a key-note talk at the British Academy in London on Wednesday 29th February 2012. The talk, entitled ‘Population Ageing in Vietnam - An Irreversible Truth?’, was part of the conference 'Contemporary Challenges in Transitional Vietnam: Insights from Vietnam Studies in the United Kingdom'. This event was aimed at engaging the participation of, and developing links between, scholars, development funders, policy makers and Vietnamese postgraduate students at British universities. The conference formed part of the Vietnam Academic Network (VAN-UK) activities which are coordinated by Matthew Tye.

Tung Suen has recently had 2 peer-reviewed journal articles accepted for publication.
 
The first article 'Taking Stock: Exploring Trends in the Field of Men’s Studies Through a Content Analysis of the American Men’s Studies Association (AMSA) Annual Conference Programs (1993-2011)' has been published in the Journal of Men's Studies. The article, co-authored with Jeffrey Cohen, provides some tentative conclusions regarding the evolution of Men’s Studies as an emerging academic discipline over the past 19 years. Tung was awarded the Loren Frankel Scholarship by the Amercian Men's Studies Association in 2009 in its annual conference held at Montreal that year. He was the first student based outside of the US to be awarded the scholarship.

The second article 'The Homeshare Programme: Critical Reflections' has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships in June 2012. Tung participated in the Homeshare Programme for almost a whole year in 2009-2010 and gained some first-hand experience of intergenerational exchange in the UK.

Taichang Chen will present a paper on "Intergenerational Transfer Motivations in Urban and Rural China" as part of the China Economy Seminar Series, Department of Economics. The presenation will take place on15th February at 5pm in Room A, Manor Road Building.

Dr. Atulya Saxena was presented the ‘Hind Rattan Award’ (Jewel of India) in recognition of outstanding services, achievements and contributions at the 31 International Congress of Non-Resident Indians on the eve of the Indian Republic Day, the 25th of January 2012 in New Delhi.  He is shown here receiving the award trophy from Dr. Bhishma Narain Singh, (ex-cabinet minister and Governor of Assam and Tamil Nadu) and Shri. K. C. Pant (ex-cabinet minister whose portfolios included Defence, Finance, Atomic Energy and Science and Technology) and the certificate of the award from Justice Markanday Katju (Chairman, Press Council of India and Retd. Judge of the Supreme Court of India).

Francesca Ghillani is to present a paper on 'Narrating trauma: the influence of otherness in autobiography' at the International Gender Studies Centre, Lady Margaret Hall. The presentation is part of the IGS 2012 Hilary Seminar Series on  "Writing women: fact and fiction".

Seung- Min Park presented a research paper titled ‘Intergenerational Solidarity and Life Satisfaction of Older People in South Korea, 2006’ at the International Conference of IFZ (Internationale Forschunszentrum für soziale und ethische Fragen), which took place from 24th to 25th of November 2011 in Salzburg, Austria. His paper will be published as a book chapter by the Cambridge Scholars Publishing in March 2012.

A further paper by Seung-Min, ‘A Conceptual Framework of the Multi-dimensional Model of the Quality of Life in Later Life’ has been accepted for publication in the Social and Public Policy Review pressed by the University of Plymouth Press in 2012.

Burcu Ozdemir  has participated in the 2nd International Workshop on the Socio-Economics of Ageing, which took place on the 4th of November, 2011 in Lisbon, Portugal. Burcu presented the paper:"Identifying Long-Term Care Policies for Turkey: Lessons from Europe".

OIA Visiting Researcher Edoardo Guaschino (Neuchatel University), has successfully joined the Athletics Club at Oxford University by defeating Cambridge in 110m hurdles, 200m and the 4x100m, during the 6th November Fresher Match. The Athletics Club at Oxford is amongst the oldest clubs in the world.

Jeaah Jung has been granted Leave to Supplicate for her doctoral degree in sociology. Jeeah's thesis 'Balancing the five Pillars of Old Age Material Security: A Case Study of Korea' is supervised by Dr. George Leeson.

Yiu-Tung Suen  has been working closely with the Subject Network for Sociology, Anthroplogy and Politics of the UK Higher Education Academy on international student issues for the past 4 years. To recognise his outstanding participation he has been awarded the 'Student Contribution' award by the Centre. This is the first time that the award has been made to a student. The award will be formally presented in September in London.

Yiu-Tung Suen has participated in the British Society of Gerontology 40th Annual Conference in Plymouth (5th to 7th July 2011). Tung presented the paper: 'Men on their own: How do older men experience and negotiate singlehood'. Tung won a full bursary awarded by the BSG to attend the conference.

Burcu Ozdemir has been selected for College Citizenship Award by Green Templeton College. The award was presented by the Principal Sir David Watson at the Summer Garden Party, which was held on the 2nd of July, 2011. College Citizenship Awards are given to students who have enriched the life of the student community through exemplary contribution to college life. Award winners received a certificate, a piece of specially-designed silver Nautilus jewellery and a cash prize.

Matthew Tye, AXA Doctoral Fellow, has participated in the Global Forum on Longevity, a multidisciplinary event on the increase in life expectancy, held in Paris on the 28th March 2011. Matthew was a discussant in a debate on major challenges posed by longevity, including retirement and employment polices, intergenerational solidarity and personal saving.
