Biosketch
Dr Phaswana-Mafuya is the Research Director of the HSRC and leading the first ever nationally representative epidemiological survey on ageing and health in South Africa. She holds a degree in Social Work, a Masters in Social Work – Gerontology and a PhD in Injury Prevention, obtained from the University of the North, South Africa. Dr Phaswana-Mafuya also completed a number of professional courses in data analysis packages as well as other professional courses. She furthermore has served as PI and Co-PI on approximately 15 projects in the past 5 years, serves as external examiner for 5 tertiary institutions and also as review panel member of 5 peer reviewed journals.

- Ageing and health survey– epidemiological survey on ageing and health covering various health domains including non-communicable chronic diseases
- Health Systems – research on health services needs and health system responsiveness especially non-communicable chronic diseases among ageing population
- Health Promotion Interventions – implementation of chronic disease health promotion interventions among the ageing population
- Patient Satisfaction Surveys – research to determine level of satisfaction with health services, especially with chronic diseases’ health services
- Health care quality – research to improve quality of health services
