Research        

Prof. Wolfgang Lutz is leader of the World Population Program of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), director of the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Professor of Applied Statistics at the WU-Vienna and Professorial Affiliate Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing. He is Co-Principal Investigator of the Asian MetaCentre for Population and Sustainable Development and serves on the Board of Directors of PRB (Population Reference Bureau), the Berlin Institute for Population and Development and is member of the US National Academy of Sciences Committee on Population.

He served as chair of the scientific program committee of the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) in Nairobi and as Secretary General of the IUSSP (International Union for the Scientific Study of Population). He is the only expert in population and development to receive the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Investigator Grant. In 2009 he received the prestigious Mattei Dogan Award of the IUSSP.

He holds a PhD in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania and a second doctorate (Habilitation) in Statistics from the University of Vienna has written/edited 22 scientific books and published over 200 articles in scientific journals (including seven in Science and Nature, two in Philosophical Transactions and 21 in Population and Development Review).
