Extended deadline for early-bird registration
The deadline for early-bird registration – and thus payment of a reduced registration fee – has been extended to July 20, 2012. A reason for the extention has been the high volume of quality abstracts received, selection and acceptance of which took longer than anticipated. Authors of abstracts have all been notified of the outcome of their submissions. The extended registration deadline will now afford them time to still register and benefit from the reduced fee. However, all prospective delegates, are encouraged to register before this deadline!
Conference sessions
The hugely successful response to the call for abstracts has required some changes and an expansion of the Scientific Programme. (An updated Provisional Programme is shown in the 2nd Announcement.) In addition to four plenary panel sessions, more than 20 parallel sessions and convened symposia, covering three tracks, will now address critical questions on the social, health, care and economic dimensions of ageing in Africa, while special round tables will set agendas for advancing research and training in these areas. A half-day symposium on Geriatric Care in Africa on Saturday 20 October (08:30 – 13:30) will provide state-of-the-art instruction from international health-care practitioners on key aspects of clinical and health care for older persons. All health-care practitioners are encouraged to attend this symposium. No additional cost will apply to fully-registered Conference delegates. A cost of R450.00 is payable to register for the symposium only.
Confirmed key speakers
Several prominent international scholars have been confirmed as key speakers in plenary sessions in the Conference programme. See details of the speakers in the updated 2nd Announcement.
New venue for conference dinner
The trendy Africa Cafe will be the venue for the Conference's "Cultural Dining Experience." Enjoy foods typical of several African countries, wines from estates around Cape Town and African entertainment in colourful, authentic African surroundings.

Professional site visit
A guided, professional site visit has been planned to two NGOs serving older clients in townships of Cape Town: 1) Rehoboth Age Exchange – a multi-purpose, seniors centre in Hanover Park, which offers a wide range of social and health care services, including day care, as well as residential care at various levels; and 2) Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA), located in Khayelitsha but with branches in other provinces and neighbouring countries, which is a peer support organisation for grandmothers who care for grandchildren orphaned or rendered vulnerable as a result of HIV/AIDS, and offers varied on-site activities and empowerment programmes to members.
The visit, by coach, scheduled for Wednesday 17 October, will leave the President Hotel at 09h00 and return to the hotel by 13:30. Registration for the site visit is required, at a cost of R185.00 per person (see the Registration Form).
