Professor Sarah Harper will today highlight to the Cheltenham Science Festival the challenges arising from the unprecedented changes in the global population. She will explore how economic and medical advances are transforming our populations. Starting at the global level, she describes the population change which is arising as economic development spreads out across the different regions, leaving in its wake a changing population structure. She will visualise the contemporary global demographic scene from a large bulge of children in Africa, across to a large bulge of young men and women in the Middle East, to the growing lump of older adults in the High Income Countries, and discuss the challenges which arise from each.
