Professor Sir Anthony B. Atkinson, 1944-2017

The Institute is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sir Tony Atkinson. Sir Tony Atkinson was Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and a Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, where he was Warden between 1994 and 2005.

Tony was very influential in the establishment of the Institute of Population Ageing and served as the first Chair of our Advisory Board. In this capacity he worked with the Institute and the NIA to establish ELSA - the English Longitudinal Survey of Ageing - based at UCL.

He pioneered the study of the economics of inequality: his most recent book Inequality: What Can Be Done was published by Harvard University Press in March 2015, and in February 2016 he was awarded the Dan David Prize for his work to find solutions to poverty.

He is deeply missed as an advisor, mentor, and  friend.
