Baby Boomers and the Ageing Revolution

The British Science Festival, one of Europe's largest celebrations of science, engineering and technology, with over 250 events, activities, exhibitions and trips is taking place from 10th to 15th September 2011 in Bradford.

The programme of events offers something for everyone with activity for families and schools groups, adults looking for entertainment and stimulating debate or professionals interested in the latest research.

One issue which is being addressed through an academic workshop is the topic of Baby Boomers and the Ageing Revolution.  This workshop is presented by the Physiological Society in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Medicine on Wednesday 12th September from 18:30 to 20:00 p.m.

This subject of ageing 'boomers' is particularly relevant as record numbers of baby boomers are turning 65 this year - over 650,000 in the UK alone. But gone are the days when 65 meant 'old' as, increasingly, people are living longer, healthier lives. Why and how do we age, is it just down to our genes? Or can we affect how we age through diet? Radio presenter Geoff Watts explores these questions and more with a team of experts.  These experts include Kenneth Howse, Senior Research Fellow,  Oxford Institute of Population Ageing who will provide an 'Overview of ageing and its impact on the UK' which will be followed by Bio-chemistry Researcher from the University of Oxford, Dr. Penelope Mason who will focus on the importance of ensuring that people live not just longer, but are healthy as they age.
