Conference on Managers and the European Labour Market

Dr George Leeson, Co-Director of the Institute, will be addressing participants at upcoming meeting of the an upcoming conference 'Managers and the European Labour Market:  facing Demograph Change through Active Ageing' on 24 & 25 May 2012 in Berlin.

This conference will focus on the many challenges Europe and its economy are facing as a result of demographic challenge.  The consequence  is a decline in the size of the available workforce, which is projected to fall from 308.9 million in 2005 to 253.4 million in 2050. At the same time the average age of the population will rise. The changes that will occur with an ageing yet shrinking workforce will affect businesses very directly and concretely.

Forecasts show that about 16 million people will be needed to fill high-skill jobs by 2020. Many companies will thus be hit by a shortage of managers in their labour force. This is even more concerning since managers perform the essentially important function of developing communication and implementing the strategies and measures necessary for a sustainable age management and thus to meet the challenges posed by demographic change.

This conference aims to open a discussion on how to meet these challenges and anticipated changes in the labour market. All stakeholders and in particular companies, human resource experts and social partners have been invited to share their experience
