Oxford Institute of Population Ageing supports Comic Relief

A new partnership with Comic Relief has been launched at the Oxford Martin School. An initial meeting event on 9th December 2011 offered the Directors of Comic Relief the opportunity to meet with leading Oxford academics to become better informed about the challenges of the 21st century,in particular about the future of food, poverty, vaccines, demography and social inequality.

As one of the presenters, Prof Sarah Harper highlighted the implications of falling fertility and longevity for global inequality. In particular, she talked about the fact that elder abandonment and abuse is a massive but under-reported problem, especially in poor countries that do not have adequate social structures or economic protection for people with declining physical and income earning ability.
