Gang Hu is a Visiting Academic at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing from October 2025 to October 2026.

He is an Associate Professor at the School of Health Management, Xinjiang Medical University, China. Dr Hu received his PhD in Demography from Peking University, following an MSc in Health Services Management and a BSc in Pharmacy from Xinjiang Medical University.

Dr Hu’s research is dedicated to the measurement of healthy ageing and to understanding the determinants and outcomes of ageing at individual and population levels. He has led multiple funded projects at regional levels, such as studies on ethnographic patterns of longevity and healthy ageing in Southern Xinjiang, comprehensive measurement and risk prediction of healthy ageing in Xinjiang, and the demographic implications of regional industrial clusters.

His current work focuses on developing and validating composite indices of healthy ageing aligned with international frameworks; modelling life-course trajectories of intrinsic capacity, multimorbidity and adiposity; and examining how sensory impairment—particularly hearing loss—metabolic and cardiovascular risks, mental well-being, and socioeconomic and environmental exposures shape cognitive ageing, disability and mortality.

During his visit to Oxford, Dr Hu will continue his work on measuring healthy ageing and translating evidence into policy-relevant insights for population health and longevity.
