Yan Wu is a Visiting Student at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing from September 2026 to March 2027. She is currently a PhD candidate in Marxist Theory at Tianjin University, China.
Her research focuses on Marxist theories of population, with particular interests in the relationship between demographic change, economic development, and social development. She is especially interested in applying Marxist approaches to the study of population ageing, examining ageing not only as a demographic phenomenon but also as a social and economic process shaped by changes in population structure, labour, production, and social reproduction.
During her visit to the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, she will further explore the relationship between population ageing and economic development, with particular attention to the changing role of older people in the labour market and the broader economic and social implications of demographic ageing. Through engagement with international research on population ageing, she aims to deepen the theoretical study of population ageing from a Marxist perspective and develop a broader comparative understanding of demographic change in different social and economic contexts.
