Yuxuan Qiao is a visiting student at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing from October 2026 to March 2027. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Demography at the Institute of Population Research, Peking University, China.
His research interests lie in population economics, with a focus on time use, time banking, and well-being in later life. His doctoral research examines how seniors in China allocate time to caregiving, leisure, social participation, physical activity, and other everyday activities, and how these patterns relate to subjective well-being. He is particularly interested in differences across gender, urban and rural residence, socioeconomic circumstances, and living arrangements, as well as the role of family responsibilities in shaping autonomy and life satisfaction. His previous publications address digital transformation, rural labor mobility, and enterprise export resilience.
During his visit to Oxford, Qiao will develop his research on time-use patterns and personal well-being among seniors in China. His planned mixed-methods approach combines quantitative analysis of time-use data with qualitative exploration of seniors’ experiences and perceptions of meaningful activity. He aims to identify distinct patterns of daily activity and examine their associations with well-being, while considering health, income, education, and family circumstances. Through engagement with researchers at the Institute, he hopes to develop comparative perspectives on ageing and contribute evidence to policies that support seniors’ autonomy, social participation, and opportunities for meaningful engagement in later life.
