Forthcoming Seminar Series

Ageing is universal. But what age comes to mean — and the consequences those meanings have — is socially shaped.

This eight-week online seminar series from the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing rethinks ageism across the life course, encompassing younger as well as older people while recognising that their experiences, structural positions and relations of power may differ.

Bringing together leading thinkers from different disciplines and settings, the series traces an intellectual journey from the conceptual foundations and mechanisms of ageism to cumulative advantage and disadvantage, power, institutional classification, cultural ideals of ageing, human rights and age justice. Throughout, it asks how age-based assumptions become consequential and how inequalities intersect and accumulate over time.

At its heart are three connected challenges: when does age differentiation become age inequality? When does that inequality constitute ageism? And how might societies recognise meaningful differences associated with age without turning them into hierarchies of value, voice, opportunity and belonging?
