OIA to present at the Austrian Academy of Sciences

The Austrian Academy of Sciences is hosting the scientific Symposium 'Ageing Societies - Mature People' on Tuesday 10 May 2011 in Vienna.

This event, led by Professor Wolfgang Lutz (Professorial Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing & Director of the Vienna Institute of Demography), is part of the annual festive meeting of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The one-day programme includes participation from leading experts in demography, biomedicine, psychology and sociology. It will be launched by the opening from the President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and will conclude with a panel discussion on 'How can our society more effectively harness the potential of the elderly'. Participating in the day will be President of Austria, Dr Heinz Fischer.

Professor Sarah Harper will present a keynote speach on 'Exploring the Implications of global Ageing', addressing the following questions:

'Should one speak more appropriately about a 'ripe' society rather than an 'old' society? What value is placed on today's experience in work, society and politics?  How can the potential of the elderly be more beneficially applied within our society?'
