Tourette's on live TV: What the BAFTAs got right, and what they got wrong


Dr Melina Malli discussed what the BAFTA debate really means about disability inclusion in 2026 in an article published by The Standrad on 24 February. 

"When disability is embraced as inspiration — as perseverance or triumph — the ongoing, messy reality can be pushed to the margins. The BAFTAs moment exposed that tension: we may celebrate the narrative of Tourette’s, yet still struggle with its live, embodied presence when it is unscripted, unpredictable, and no longer buffered by cinema’s framing devices", said Malli.
