Nearly one in five people in England and Wales are aged over 65, the highest proportion ever recorded, according to a Census 2021.
Professor Sarah Harper comments on the declining share of children and people of working age in an article in Financial Times - Older population in England and Wales hits record high .
The latest data reflected “Brexit and the current government emphasis on reducing migration, which has always tended to be of young people of working age who help to drive our economy and boost our health and social care sector”, said Harper.
