Institute Director addresses Oxford Business Alumni

Dean of Said Business School Peter Tufano has welcomed Oxford Business Alumni members to celebrate the New Year at the Institute of Directors in London on Saturday 2 February 2013.

The event  has set the stage for the upcoming launch of the new virtual problem-solving community -- Global Opportunities and Threats: Oxford (GOTO). The program this year will focus on the business opportunities and threats resulting from the global trend of shifting demographics – the inaugural GOTO topic.

The evening's distinguished speaker was Professor Sarah Harper, Director of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, who spoke about Confronting 21st Century Population Challenges.

Confronting 21st Century Population Challenges
Global population size has attracted considerable attention as the world recently hit 7 billion. But it is not only size which is important, the world’s population is undergoing changes in:

  • Density – we are becoming more urban.
  • Distribution – we are becoming more mobile.
  • Composition – especially in age composition, we are becoming older.

The changing age composition of the globe has resulted from two drivers - falling fertility and falling mortality. Together these two demographic drivers will have a profound influence on the 21st century - how we work, produce, consume and live our lives.
