Please join us from 8.30am on Thursday 26 April 2012 for the launch of a major policy report from the Royal Society.

Rapid and widespread changes in the world's human population, coupled with unprecendented levels of consumption, present profound challenges to human health and wellbeing, and to the natural environment.  Although a lot is known about these linkages, they do not feature prominently in international debates about sustainable development.  In the run up to Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, taking place this June, the Royal Society offers this report; the result of a wide-ranging, international study.

The Chair of the Royal Society's international Working Group, Nobel Laureate Sir John Sulston FRS, and three of the Working Group members will present the report's findings, describe the challenges and the opportunities that such changes will present for people and the planet and discuss the prospects for genuinely sustainable development.  The Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP, Secretary of State for International Development, will offer his thoughts on the importance of including population in sustainable development discussions.

Speakers:

- Opening remarks from Sir Paul Nurse FRS, President of the Royal Society

- Sir John Sulston FRS, Chair, Royal Society People and the Planet Working Group

- Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP, Secretary of State for International Development

- Professor Sarah Harper, Director, Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, University of Oxford
