20th International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics Conference | Seoul (23 – 27 June 2013)


Several current members as well as alumni of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing (OIPA), University of Oxford, participated in the very successful 20th International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) Conference in Seoul, South Korea .

Dr Isabella Aboderin, a Senior Research Fellow at the OIPA, was awarded an IAGG Presidential Award by Bruno Vellas for her involvement in African Gerontology and Geriatrics, with a particular attention to Social and Human Rights issues. She also participated in several symposia:

  • In the AGEING AND THE POST-2015 GLOBAL FRAMEWORK symposium, sponsored by Age UK, she did a presentation on AGEING IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA’S POST-2015 AGENDA? THE ROLE OF EVIDENCE AND GERONTOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES
  • In a session on Strengthening the Rights of Older Persons Globally - Advances and Challenges, she presented a paper on African and Global Endeavours on the Rights of Older Persons: Forging Connections.

Isabella and Dr Jaco Hoffman also did joint presentations, namely:

  • POVERTY-IMPACTS ON SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING IN OLD AGE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: INTERGENERATIONAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL DIMENSIONS in the Global Social Initiative on Ageing (GSIA) Presidential Symposium on International Perspectives on Poverty and Liveability of Older Persons, and
  • CAREGIVING FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN CONTEXTS OF POVERTY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: RECOGNIZING AND ADDRESSING A ‘CULTURAL LAG’

Jaco furthermore participated in the BRICS Forum on Ageing and Income Inequality in the BRICS Countries, convened by the Gerontological Society of China.
Isabella and Jaco thankfully acknowledge the generous funding from the IAGG and the Gerontological Society of China without which support their presence wouldn’t have been possible.

Patricia O’Neill, a DPhil candidate from the OIPA, co-chaired a session on Intergenerational Relationships and the impact of Population Ageing in which she also did a presentation on WHY WOULD FILIAL OBLIGATION REMAIN A STRONG NORMATIVE VALUE AMONG MODERN CHINESE WOMEN?

DPhil candidate, Jiweon Jun, presented a paper on Dynamics of Life Balance in Later Life in the UK: Time Use and Successful Ageing.

Several alumni of the OIPA also participated, namely dr Taichang Chen (China); dr Tung Yiu Tung Suen(Hong Kong) and dr Jeaah Jung.
