'Ageing in Latin America': LARNA Conference, Mexico City, 6-8 October 2010


Photography: Naomi IbukiThe second Oxford Institute of Ageing’s LARNA (Latin American Research Network on Ageing) conference is being held at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City from 6 to 8 October 2010

Prof. Sarah Harper will be launching the conference with a keynote lecture on ‘Exploring global population ageing’.  Also participating from the OIA will be Dr. George Leeson, Director of the LARNA network, who will be presenting results of a study supported by a British Academy grant on ‘The Demographics of Ageing in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Iberian Peninsula’ and Mr. Jaco Hoffman who will talk about ‘Community Development with Older Persons in (South) Africa: conceptual and methodological considerations’.

The remainder of the programme, co-ordinated by Drs. Veronica Montes de Oca and Alejandro Klein features leading edge research on a wide range of themes including:  Teaching, Research and Social Action; Subjective and Social Identity; Families, Migration and Intergenerational Processes; and Public Policies on Old Age and Ageing.  In addition, there will be visual presentations about the ageing experience; roundtable exchanges about interdisciplinary experiences of Ageing in Latin & South America, the Iberian Peninsula and the Caribbean; and a closing lecture on Social Protection and Ageing.  A special edition of the OIA ‘Ageing Horizons’ Issue 9 publication featuring eight papers presented at the 2009 conference will be also be highlighted (link here to the Ageing Horizons paper)
