Explaining Gift Behavior: Altruism or Social Norms? Theory and Evidence from Romania

This paper examines the motives behind inter-household gift transfers. We have formulated a theoretical model where we assume that, besides altruistic income redistribution, social norms and cultural traditions also encourage gift giving.
